UNRAU RETAINS WHEELCHAIR DIVISION TITLE AT MANITOBA OPEN

Posted on August 24, 2015

The 2015 Tech-Air Manitoba Open Championships took place at the Kildonan Tennis Club from August 12 – 21, 2015. The tournament is the capstone of the outdoor tennis season for Manitoba athletes, and is considered the top local event for the wheelchair athletes.

This year’s wheelchair division saw five entries, with James Bernus and Samuel Unrau battling it out for the top spot in the division. The match took place under the lights on August 21st with Samuel Unrau coming out victorious in a hard fought 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

“This match was definitely more intense than previous years, and I believe that speaks a lot to the development of our athletes over the last year. We have made some major strides in our competitiveness, and James’s performance matched that expectation”, said Unrau.

Although the Manitoba Open is the top local event for the wheelchair athletes, there is a more significant tournament just on the horizon. This year, Manitoba plans to send 2-3 athletes to the Birmingham National Wheelchair Tennis Championships in October.

“Vancouver will be a great opportunity to see where our development is among other athletes from across the country. Everyone here is excited to go”.
